Tagen McEntire

Tagen currently lives in Draper and spends her summers in Star Valley Wyoming. She writes a column for the Star Valley Independent (SVI) Newspaper on hikes in the area. All of these hikes of Star Valley will soon be published in a book in the Spring of 2020. She is an adventure columnist for SVI as well and is currently writing a series called Unlimited Women in the Outdoors. When she is not writing she’s a travel advisor and is traveling the world, playing with her two beautiful girls and handsome husband. She really loves to hike, ski, mountain bike, garden, cook and she has a hobby chicken farm.

Tagen’s passion for the outdoors, hiking and travel is evident not only in her education, employment, and leisure activities, but it personifies the core of who she is, what she values, respects and strives to protect. She graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation and Tourism with an emphasis in experiential education. She received her teaching certificate at Utah State University in Special Education and reading. She taught special education for 7 years and travel and tourism for 3 years for Granite School District.

She was a naturalist along the San Francisco Bay in California, where she taught people of all ages about birds and the environment. In the Summer of 2004 she was invited to go on a 38 day National Outdoor Leadership (NOLS) trip in the Wind Rivers in Wyoming. This course was recorded by a production crew and the program was on the Travel/ Discovery channel.  She was a river guide on the Snake River in Wyoming and the Eagle River in Alaska. She worked for the Outdoor Recreation Program at the University of Utah. She led students, staff and faculty on outdoor adventure trips, where she taught them how to do a variety of useful skills in the outdoors. She has led people on rafting, hiking, and biking trips.

fun facts about me

• I have a handsome husband that I met through the University of Utah Campus Recreation Program. The first date was 3 days long, we went wakeboarding at Lake Mead.

• I have two beautiful little girls, both with blue eyes. One is a serious rock climber and the other one loves to dance and sing.

• I have a weakness for dark chocolate, cheese, & chips and salsa.

• I have been on the Travel Channel for a documentary called “Backcountry Boot camp”.

• I was a river guide in Jackson, Wyoming and Anchorage, AK.

• I have been skiing since I was 4 years old.

• I have lived in China for 5 months and taught English.

• I have been on 6 humanitarian trips; 2 to El Salvador, 2 to Nicaragua, South Africa and Wuxi, China.

• I am a master gardener. That means I took a bunch of classes through Utah State and learned about plants.

• I own chickens and built a chicken tractor. I won the Semi Champion ribbon at the county fair for one of my chickens.

• I have two degrees from Utah State University in Special Education/Reading and a Degree from University of Utah in Parks, Recreation and Tourism.
